  • 1 cup all-purpose flour divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 sweet yellow onion large, cut into ½-inch thick rings and separated
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • Cooking spray

  • Combine 3/4 cup flour and salt in a shallow dish. Beat remaining flour, buttermilk, and egg together in a separate shallow dish until smooth and thickened. Add the breadcrumbs to a separate shallow dish.
  • Lightly dredge onion rings in flour. Dip onion rings into the buttermilk mixture and let excess liquid drip off. Dredge onion rings in breadcrumbs until evenly coated.
  • Spray frying basket and onion rings with cooking spray and arrange onion rings in a single layer in the frying basket, working in batches as needed.
  • Place frying basket in cooking vessel and close the lid. Set the temperature to 400°F and cook onion rings for 5 minutes.
  • Flip onion rings and continue cooking until they become brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes more. Repeat the same steps with remaining onion rings.
